In the latest entry in the saga of Erling Skjalgsson, the 11th Century Norwegian chieftain is struck by a deadly curse, and must journey north along with his friends in order to crush it at its source. Meanwhile Freydis, niece of the smith Lemming, is kidnapped by the servants of a mysterious, ancient cannibalistic race who dwell in secret in the mountains of the north. Once again the Irish priest Father Ailill narrates a tale of struggle, faith, endurance, and supernatural peril. Fans of H. Rider Haggard will delight in this "lost world" adventure.

Hailstone Mountain The Erling Skjalgsson Saga Book 4 eBook Lars Walker

When I read Lars Walker's Year of the Warrior, I got an introduction to his characters Erling (the Viking) and Aillil (the Irish priest). Since that time, I have been hooked on the stories chronicling their lives together. You need not read them in order. It is possible to enter the Erling story at almost any point and have the wonderful reading experience that Walker delivers every time. I have read everything he has published and will continue to do so as long as he keeps writing.

Hailstone Mountain contains several stories within a story. It reminds me to some degree of the old Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser tales in the sense that the two heroes have consecutive adventures made all the more interesting by their different talents and personalities. Fantasy at a very high level.

Hailstone Mountain The Erling Skjalgsson Saga Book 4 eBook Lars Walker Reviews

While I've read other books by the author (including "Troll Valley"), this is the first I've read from the "Erling Skjalgsson" series. I enjoyed it very much, and now am compelled (though technically not "enthralled") to purchase the previous parts of this saga ("The Year of the Warrior" and "West Oversea").
I gave this tale only four stars because it is a little weak in places, but in all an entertaining fictional story at the interface of Christianity and ancient Norse religion. Lars Walker is good because he carries us into our own imaginations. I often have trouble picturing events as described by authors, but never those by Lars Walker.
Once again, Lars Walker delivers another wonderful Erling saga full of action, story-telling and solid Christianity. Having read all his books, the characters in the Erling sagas have become dear to me and I am happy to read of their continuing adventures once more. This book offers several battles that span sword fights, spiritual struggles and emotional trials. The monsters are a fresh telling of the old Norse and Germanic foes found in the old sagas. I highly recommend this book.
Great story, loved the characters, action, plot and good knowledge of the landscape. Having lived in Stavanger, I once again enjoyed memories of the landscape and swimming at Sola beach. Being Christian, I appreciate how he sets an ill-trained Irish Priest in the service of a local chieftain and juxtaposes the traditions and ideas of a pagan people. The adventure develops rapidly with many challenges on the road to a battle with giants in the north.

There is one short moment when he pounds a political hammer, despite the fact that I agree with him, it seemed a little heavy handed. The rest is so good, his pontificating is forgivable. Highly recommended. I plan to check out other books in the series
I downloaded Hailstone Mountain An Erling Skalgsson Novel about a month ago and read the first six chapters and was disappointed. I couldn't get into the story so I set the book aside to read something else. A few days ago, I read a good review of the book so I decided to give it another chance.

I started up where I left off and began reading chapter seven. I soon found out that I had quit reading just as the story was about to take off. This book lives up to its description as a saga, a tale of worthy men; or, to be more exact, tales, because just when you think it's all over something else happens.

Hailstone Mountain is a fine book and I plan on reading the other books in the Skalgsson Saga.
One of my literature professors taught us that good writing both teaches and delights. Lars Walker's novel "Hailstone Mountain" is good writing. It is encouraging to have such good books from the perspective of the Christian worldview. I enjoyed both the many action scenes and the excursions into dreams and visions. Lars has a very good imagination and it shows in his books. It was helpful to have read "West Oversea" first but not necessary; you learn many of the main characters in the first novel. It is helpful to memorize the pronunciations of each characters name to set the proper mood for the territory they live and die in. There is much wisdom in this book and it goes very deep in several places. A hint on the theme is that there are ALWAYS those beings everywhere that will never quit enslaving other people for their own evil desires. Slavery is much, much worse than dying, especially if you give into it on your own. Only those HEROES who have the courage to fight for their freedom, and die if necessary, can be free from the Slave Masters. Some of the modern forms of slavery in my opinion DEBT, DRUGS, PEACE AT ANY COST, and LUST FOR WEALTH. Enjoy the book. You won't regret the time invested.
If you, like me are interested in vikings, you'll no doubt enjoy this yarn. If you don't particularly care one way or another, I can still recommend it to the average fantasy fan. Here's why

1. The characters are interesting, memorable, and likeable. The later attribute is especially important to me. Too many characters are rendered intolerable in an effort to make them "edgy" or "real." These characters are certainly both, but likeable too, which brings me to the second point.

2. Walker's Vikings react to their circumstances as one might imagine they would. Many of them are Christians, yet still behave as people would in a culture in transition from a violent pagan past to Christianity. I found the tension between Christianity and pagan roots interesting. the characters behave as men who are learning to be good. In short, the heroes are neither Christian nor secular Mary Sues, which is much appreciated.

3. The world is dark, but not completely black. It's written from a Christian perspective- one that acknowledges the immense darkness of the world, but also contrasts that thought with the truth and power of God. It isn't some nihilistic drag like the modern fantasy novel; it's more akin to Tolkien, and as a result, this book is built on much stronger foundations.

Yes, this is Christian fiction. I doubt anyone would object though, since the Christian elements aren't ham-fisted in any way. True, they sometimes seem tacked-on, but I personally didn't mind.

All in all, a great read.
